History of Los Cristianos

"Los Cristianos" is a coastal village located in the municipality of Arona. Thanks to its popularity it has become one of the main tourist centres of Tenerife.

But how did it all begin?

The first historical information about the village dates back to the 16th century, when the harbor was already present.

Throughout its history, this town has suffered several pirate raids.

Although, it is important to clarify that plundering by corsairs was not something that only happened in Tenerife, but was an evil that plagued all the islands equally.

However, Los Cristianos did not begin to grow until the second half of the 19th century, due to the boom in industry and commerce. It began to prosper as an import-export port town.

In chronological order, during the Second World War, Los Cristianos was forced to build several fortresses, some of which are still standing today.

It was not until the second half of the 20th century that the economy of the Canary Islands changed from the primary sector to the tertiary sector.

From this date onwards, Los Cristianos has continued to expand and focus on tourism, its fame being based on its warm climate, the numerous activities that the town offers and its strategic location, which provides easy access to the main attractions of the island. It has thus become one of the most important destinations in the Canary Islands.

As a curious fact, did you know that the harbour of Los Cristianos currently ranks first in Spain in terms of passenger traffic?
